The River (Live in Berlin, Bruce Springsteen cover) Josh Ritter

“The River” by Josh Ritter (Live Bruce Springsteen cover)

“The River” has got to be one of the saddest songs ever written.

It’s about a boy who falls in love with a girl and they have a super sweet romance. But then she gets pregnant and they get married in a haste - “No wedding day smiles/ No walk down the aisle/ No flowers, no wedding dress.” So now the both of them are stuck in this life that they somehow fell into; hopes, dreams, love and passion all on the back burner - “Is a dream a lie if it don’t come true/ Or is it something worse?”.

It’s basically the dramatized story of all our lives. And that’s why the song’s so depressing, because you can somehow relate it back to yourself.

But the Springsteen version has got that weird wild west vibe to it, and the uptempo-ness also doesn’t quite do the story justice. This Josh Ritter version from his 2007 show in Berlin really hits the nail on the head though. It’s a quiet little acoustic number and his falsetto adds that extra cheapshot of heartache.

What I appreciate most about his version is that he sings it like he is telling a story - his story.

Sufjan Stevens' The Age of Adz

Guys, that right there is the cover art for the NEW SUFJAN STEVENS LP!

Just a few days ago, he released All Delighted People EP, and today, Asthmatic Kitty announced that The Age of Adz (pronounced ‘odds’) will drop October 12, and a double-LP will follow November 9. This will be his first full-length in five years; patience is rewarded.

The label describes it:
We can say it shows an extensive use of electronics (banjos and acoustic guitars give way to drum machines and analog synthesizers), and an obsession with cosmic fantasies (space, heaven, aliens, love), to create an explicit pop-song extravaganza, augmented by heavy orchestration, and maybe even a few danceable moments. Enjoy Your Rabbit meets the BQE. But with songs. Verse, chorus, bridge, backbeat. Gated reverb. Space echo. Get your boogey on.

Sounds very very exciting. And since The National were said to be helping out with Sufjan’s up-coming album, that would mean that The Age of Adz will probably have some Berninger/Dessner/Devendorf magic too. I can’t wait.

Tracklist:
01 “Futile Devices”
02 “Too Much”
03 “Age of Adz”
04 “I Walked”
05 “Now That I’m Older”
06 “Get Real Get Right”
07 “Bad Communication”
08 “Vesuvius”
09 “All for Myself”
10 “I Want To Be Well”
11 “Impossible Soul”

Local Natives (Yours Truly session) → yourstru.ly

(image via Yours Tru.ly)

Yours Truly takes the guys from Local Natives to the train tracks and they actually witness a robbery. So they do their civic duty, chat with the YT crew member who caught the robber and get back to business with “Airplanes”.

The song was written by Kelcey Ayer about his grandfather, whom he never had the chance to get to know (awww).

On another note, I hate to be a fangirl, but Local Natives are one bunch of good-looking men. Hahaha, aww shucks.

Watch it/read about it here.

The End's Not Near (New Year Cover) Band Of Horses

“The End’s Not Near” by Band of Horses (New Year cover)

Ben Bridwell is pretty much an amazing man. He’s got that voice that renders you useless when you hear it. You just want to crumble and die. Not in a gory Texas Chainsaw Massacre way, but like a OMG-Ryan-Gosling-just-kissed-Rachel-McAdams-in-The-Notebook-way. But less cheesy. If you get my drift.

So, a very early version of BOH took New Year’s “The End’s Not Near” and basically made it an indie rock masterpiece.

Such a great band. But what the hell was Infinite Arms? Well, at least they played a very nice acoustic “Laredo” here.

Tiger Maximum Balloon

“Tiger” by Maximum Balloon

Dave Sitek’s done some amazing things with TV on the Radio. That’s currently on hiatus, but his new project Maximum Balloon will release their debut self-titled album on 21st August.

Lead single “Tiger” is a synth-heavy electro dance-y number that calls to mind Fujiya & Miyagi and LCD Soundsystem. Now we wait for the synchronized hand actions.

You Were a Kindness The National

“You Were a Kindness” by The National (live on The Current)

(image via shorefire)

Matt Berninger and company drop by The Current studios to play four songs; three from this year’s High Violet and one gem of a new song.

“You Were a Kindness” is a piano-driven ballad with the words of a tortured lover (‘confident wreck’, ‘slow disaster’, ‘radiant darkness’). It is a pessimistic tale conjured of longing, self-pity and resentment. It is all very depressing, made more heart-breaking by Berninger’s immaculate baritone.

Listen to the whole shebang here.

Also, their entire 29/5/2010 Terminal 5 show which was recorded for SPIN’s 25th anniversary is on Youtube. Check that out if you missed the web-stream.
